A friend of mine has been moved over to Eon next by effectively force as she was given no option.
The last tariff I got her to be on was with no standing charge.(now no longer a thing due to making it easier to compare quotes and suppliers)
She still continues to use 0 (zero) gas but now needs to stump up £120+ a year. She says she has explained this to Eon but they claim they can do anything about it.
Clearly with the costs of everything going up how can she have this money refunded and stopped from paying for something she doesn't use?
Is the simple answer move to a more customer friendly supplier like SSE who will do this with a check of the meter and check that there has been no usage?
She is also disabled, although yet to do the paperwork to claim for disability payments/PIP.
And I don't fancy going into the details of how gas is cheaper than electric for heating..I know full well and we've had that argument and she doesn't want to use gas.
Thanks for taking the time to post. Do you know if your friend sends in regular readings this is important in ensuring that your friend is billed accurately. If the meter is still in the property and hasn't been capped then unfortunately your friend would still be liable for the standing charges.

This would actually require E.On Next to completely disconnect and remove the gas meter first. It costs about £160 to do this but ALL charges will cease from the following day. You'll still need to pay off whatever charges were accrued prior to meter removal, but you won't rack up any more after that. The gas transporter may get in touch a few months after that to confirm whether you still want a supply - simply respond to that and they'll do the rest.
Just another guy passing by... The unknown tech way...

They've lived in the property for just over 4 years and I'm pretty sure the meter reading hasn't changed. Certainly not in the last 3 years.
If the meter is still operational the standing charge will still be active, if you get in touch with your regional gas operations company they will cap it,
in other words it won`t be capable of supplying gas, I understand this service is normally free of charge.

I looked into that initially and was quoted £500 hence why I got them onto a zero standing charge tariff.

If that's the cost then that makes financial sense as I'm guessing the standing charge must be roughly £140 a year.

Actually, unlike electricity standing charges which vary considerably according to which region you are in, gas standing charges apply nationally and are currently £94.62 inc VAT per annum for DD customers under the price cap..
