@DebF_EONNext why should we buy one? it should be up to eon to provide us with one, not for us to go into debt for £40 to £50.00.
so why have we not received one from you?

That is the policy as I understand it @Johns . You always get your first IHD for free regardless of supplier, usually when the smart meters are initially installed. Likewise, you'll also get one for free if you move in to a new property and the previous customer ran off with the existing IHD. The other main one to trigger a free IHD is if yours develops a fault within the first 12 months.

Other than that, it's up to you to pay for one. If you have never had one at all, please chat with customer service and they should be able to send one out in the post.

    Hey @Johns 👋,

When smart meter is installed an IHD is provided free of charge and it comes with a 12 month warranty, if for any reason the IHD stops working or is damaged we will replace this within the warranty period. We are unable to send IHD replacements outside the warranty period so this is why we have partnered up to offer an alternative solution for those who may want to arrange for a replacement themselves.

I think it is important to point out that your smart meter will still communicate with us even without an IHD & we should still be able to poll readings from your meter, the IHD is not a necessary function, although I do appreciate it is helpful in monitoring your usage. You can still monitor your usage from your actual meter by keeping a regular eye on your readings & recording your usage this way. You can also find your historical meter readings in your online account.

If the big selling point of smart meters to consumers is that with the IHD, they can see their usage, real times costs etc and hopefully reduce their usage ... wouldn't it be logical in the event of a failure to replace the IHD free of charge?

It would only be logical though if "the big selling point of smart meters to consumers is that with the IHD, they can see their usage, real times costs etc and hopefully reduce their usage" was the real reason behind the smart meter rollout, but of course it isn't.
The consumers who are most likely to get any benefit of a smart meter and IHD probably won't be in a position to fork out over 50 quid for a replacement, making it even more illogical not to provide a free replacement and also makes something of a mockery of the selling points.

I'm not having a go at eon-next, I'm just making a general observation that the policies around smart meters are something of a farce and go against the perceived reasons for having them.

Now, if they'd said the main purpose of smart metering was that the energy suppliers could charge the consumer variable tariffs at 30 minute intervals then I doubt that there'd be many takers, although they'd probably have still forced them in as they're doing now by making it a condition of cheaper (remember them!) tariffs.

In the 2019 Government analysis, customer benefits were put at 39%, supplier benefits 42%, and demand shifting benefits 7%. See the pie

@DebF_EONNextafter our solar ov system install, we were contacted by E-on and coerced into having a smart meter installed, under the bullcrap sales pitch of it "Saving us money." The indoor display unit has never worked more than 10Ft away from the meter and whenever I've complained about it, I've been given the brush off.
I find it ironic that the meter can quite happily communicate with a telephone mast 2 miles away yet can't speak to its little display box in the next room. And now we're expected to buy our own?
