Hi, I had to abort a smart meter installation on Monday due to engineer wanting to go into the loft to inspect the boiler and flue before staring work. Unfortunately the kids were still in bed and there is a ton of stuff that I would need to move before he could do this. Also unusually the electric meter is under the stairs and the suppliers fuse is on the other side of the wall in the kitchen. The fuse is accessible but the kitchen cupboard has been built around it so that there was no wires showing. The engineer was very upset about this and was suggesting that the cupboard could do with removing first so that he could see the cables. Can anyone confirm that this is the case as I thought switching to smart meters was a quick and easy job. Having to remove my kitchen cupboard and having a guy in the loft seem a little extreme to say the least.
Thanks
Darrell
So in regards to the smart installation, the engineer will check the boiler and make sure the flute is still there to ensure that the installation will not/or tamper with your boiler at all - we wouldn't want the smart meters to be working but no hot water! This is why they do the double checks.
The engineer would like to see all the wires with the meter to ensure that they are doing everything as safely as possible and make sure that all wires are in place 😀.
Have a lovely Easter!

@Han_EONNext so its common practice to ask someone to remove part of their kitchen to have a meter replaced that is under the stairs? Also if the boiler is in the loft and the hot water works when you turn the tap on how can changing the meter which is outside stop the boiler from working?
So yes the engineer would need to check the boiler, I understand just testing the tap, but they would need to perform the proper checks before the job is finished.
And in regards to the cupboard; it really does depend how much of the meter they can see.
I think its a sensible action on Eon's part - imagine if they fitted your meter(s), didn't do any checks and the next day your home suffered a catastrophe that a simple visual check would have spotted.
The message is simple - make sure that quick access to important parts of the supply pipes, cables and appliances is maintained. Boxing things in so they look nice can bring its own problems.
@meldrewrebornThe meter is under the stair and is easily accessible. If a simple meter change can cause a "catastrophe" then I think I will cancel the whole thing. Thanks
