Burning is entirely sensible as most plastics are made from oil. Providing the correct technology is used it isn’t polluting, and it infinitely better than landfill or export.
That's interesting to know @meldrewreborn in all honesty I don't know much about how it is incinerated but my initial thought is it can't be good 😬! If you have any sources with more info on this I would love to have a read so I can learn more, you can never be too informed 😊

How did everyone that took part get on with the big plastic count, @Andy65 & @Tracy have you had your carbon footprint results in yet? I was shocked with my results, of all the plastic for that week (which was much more than I expected 😥) only 17% of my plastic waste would be recycled, 25% of it exported, 20% would go to landfill and 38% would be incinerated. The last part especially was the biggest shock to me, I genuinely didn't realise how much plastic is actually burned 😱 this worries me as surely this must be having such a negative impact on air pollution?!
I had 15% recycled in the UK, 21% exported, 23% exported and 41% incinerated. I'm guessing here but I wouldn't be surprised if nearly all participants had very similar results to us.
I didn't like the tone of the results email "If all the households were the same as yours..", don't point the finger at me as I'm not the one putting everything in plastic. It's been noticeable how Supermarkets have used Covid as a reason to close their fresh meat/fish/deli counters, they obviously lost money running them but again they're pushing the customer into buying pre-packaged goods in plastic.
What I thought was surprising was the 15% recycled in the UK, that seems unbelievably low to me.
@meldrewreborn I too was shocked with the amount that we burn.. but hopefully it's done in the right way, my first thought was all the toxins 😨 but perhaps need to look into that side of it a bit more for peace of mind! 🙂
@Andy65 I agree the percentage of recycled plastic is very low but from what I read we have loads more capacity to recycle and increase this, would be interesting to see how we can improve it and why it is so low...🤔

I don't know a lot about the subject @Anasa_EONNext but the whole recycling thing is far too complicated. The amount of symbols for a start is ridiculous, then there's the 'check with your local recycling centre' comment that sometimes appears on packaging.
The low recycling figure is based on what we've said we've used over a week though, so that suggests it's down the plastics that are used.
Only 8% recycled, that seems very low. I wonder if they'll publish the overall results to see how we compare to everyone else who took part, although if I were you I wouldn't look 😉
@Andy65 I think they are going to publish the results. I hope that it is going to push big companies to make a change in the way they package products!
