I emailed them as I have a electric smart meter but no gas smart meter.
I can't believe the reply
Apologies for the delayed response.
Upon investigating your account we can see that you are not eligible for a smart meter for the gas.
Regarding our national data base if you already have a smart meter you are not eligible to have a smart meter.
We are going to have to remove the existing electricity smart meter to a credit meter but that will come at a cost price of £235.00.
Then after we will have to book for an installation of a dual fuel smart meter for both electricity and gas and that will be free of charge.
As we are unable to book a smart meter for gas only, as it is a business decision.
We look forward hearing your response
Why do I need to pay £235, I thought smart meters are free.

And waste a perfectly good smart meter? No chance. that's technically fraudulent behaviour because it'd be a false claim for the incentives to install smart meters with.

I have forwarded the email on to ofgem as I thought everyone would get smart meters for free.
They attempted to swap the gas meter a while back but put it off due to the weather and have never been back.
In that case, as far as I'm concerned, you still qualify for the gas meter upgrade without replacing the electric meter, on the basis the previous upgrade was never completed. Please don't pay that meter removal fee, it's definitely not necessary!
If Eon Next Think you already have a Smart Meter can you challenge them to get it to report your consumption? They may then discover that the national database is wrong - i'm sure it wouldn't be the first time!
