Does anyone know if there are any workarounds planned for those of us in flats or apartments where all the meters are in a communal-area on the ground-floor?
When my meter was in "SMETS1" mode, the In-Home Display unit used to work, as it got its data via the mobile-phone networks, so as-long-as it could receive a signal, it worked. However, since the remote-update of my meter to make it "SMETS2-compliant" a year-or-so ago, I've not been able to use the IHD as it now has to contact the meter directly, and I'm not close to where the communal-room is.
I understand a government-appointed body called the "DCC" are supposed to be suggesting workarounds, but has anything been done on this?
For example, could live-readings not somehow be sent through the earth-wire, similar to how repeaters work for your home-broadband? Or would it not be possible to see either live, or at-least half-hourly updates, within the E•ON Next mobile app?
It does feel that for those of us who live in places where the meter is not in our property, we don't really get the full-benefits of having a smart-meter!
Have you asked customer service about this? I think there are solutions like the one suggested in the post above or maybe a dual band comms hub. Why not send an email to hi@eonnext.com to see what they can offer.
I'm an Eon Next dual fuel customer with no particular expertise but have some time on my hands that I am using to try and help out a bit.
@JoeSoap I asked customer-services years ago when the meter first got updated, and they even sent an engineer out at the time but the conclusion was they couldn't do anything to help, such as changing the meter, as I would still be out-of-range. Apparently for people like me in "MDUs" all they can do is wait until the "Alt HAN" group eventually come-up with a workaround. 🤷🏻♂️
I really wish I could just see my live energy-use in the "E•ON Next" app on my phone. Would be a lot easier... even just seeing the half-hourly readings right-after they've been sent would be better-than-nothing. Really feels like for those of us in MDUs there should have been a workaround at the start before switching us from SMETS1 to SMETS2...
Still worth a go contacting customer service after all this time as I think alt HAN is available now. Have you tried something like the Hildebrand Bright app to check your usage?
@JoeSoap Nope, but in a separate-issue my smart-meter has seemingly stopped-communicating around 22/23 last month, as I see no daily-data on the "Usage" screen of the app since then, and entering my MPAN and postcode on https://smartmetercheck.citizensadvice.org.uk also seems to confirm it is not currently operating in smart-mode.
I've e-mailed the hi@eonnext.com address, including my account-number, late last-week, when I first-noticed, but have heard nothing-back. And each-time I've tried phoning since, I've gave-up after around 10-15 minutes as I cannot get-through to anyone! 😢
Seems your meter has gone dumb just to make things more difficult. I can't really be of much help here but just hope that CS get back to you soon. Just for interest, the Bright app is free to download and has data going back over a year. It does normally take a day to catch up but sometimes is right up-to-date. Not much good if your meters are currently dumb of course. But if you can at least get that sorted...
@JoeSoap Yes, I'd need that sorted first otherwise there is no data for any app to show to begin with!
Though I see the Hildebrand Bright promoted a lot on here, but... is it safe? I mean, it's a third-party app, with a low-amount of downloads (10K+ on the Google Play Store and just 69 ratings on the Apple Store) from a company I've never heard-of. And I notice to access your readings you first "have to prove your identity and that you're the account-holder". How does one do that -- do you have to submit ID to them, like your passport?
A few of us use Bright on here and others use Hugo or another one whose name escapes me. I only remember having to put in the GUID number of my IHD to get my data. If no IHD is available then I think they want to see a copy of a bill or something. It's a good app as far as I'm concerned and I would miss it if I couldn't use it for some reason.
Also... you should be able to see data from when you had comms even though you currently don't. It's interesting to see consumption down to half-hourly intervals.
@JoeSoap It does say within the "E•ON Next" app that they are working to add half-hourly breakdowns into the app. No idea when the ETA is for that, though! Be nice to have, as that isn't data I can get off the meter itself...
