Nope, not illegal at all. The actual charges would only be taken when the bill is officially generated, but some suppliers are using a live balance mechanism these days, which is designed to help you keep track of your spending. The actual money only comes out once you get the bill. I know of at least one other supplier that does this as that supplier is the one I use.

Actually no, the money has been taken from my account balance. Meaning that I have previously paid it via direct debit and can no longer request it back, even though eon next has not generated an invoice for that amount. They have taken possession of it.
Ah ok, I see. This sounds like something that goes beyond what I can help with, but you're not out of options. When it comes to accessing your account, I have to step back as I'm not allowed to do that kind of thing, but I know someone who can. @Anasa_EONNext should be able to give you a hand when she next checks in.
Just in case the other person pops along, this issue is now resolved. The smart meter was not sending a read of my gas, so I did it manually and a bill was then generated which included invoice details of the electricity charge.
