My IHD struggles to connect to the smart meter in the box outside. But I may have thought of a workaround. Does anyone know how the IHD collects its usage data? For example, if I used it on battery power and moved it into range for an hour, twice a day. Would that be sufficient for it to collect 24 hours worth of data? Or is the data collection real time only?
The only place in the flat where it is in range is next to the front door, where there are no plug points. Any other suggestions welcome.
It's mostly a real-time connection, but you can definitely have the IHD pull down everything at once whenever it's connected within 90 seconds or so (but only for electricity). While this works, it also means you'd have to review all the data there and then - if you move out of range it doesn't get retained for more than a few seconds. The battery should hold old for more than enough time to let you do that though, as they usually last around four hours.

Really? The IHD will suck up all the data but doesn’t retain it? That seems like a design flaw straight away! So unless it’s in constant communication, the ‘history’ part of the menu is useless?
I’m going to leave it in the living room for a few days with intermittent/no signal and see what happens. But how can I then tell if it’s been functioning during that time?
True. IHDs don't really have much in the way of storage and the exact behaviour depends on the IHD. I've tested with my pair of Chameleon IHD6 this afternoon and found that as long as the device remains powered on, it may still retain the data for a short time after losing the connection - but it's wiped out completely if the IHD reboots for any reason.
After the connection is regained, the IHD will attempt to re-download all available usage data from the meters within two minutes or so, along with getting the live data where available. If you can post a photo of your IHD, I can provide some more instructions for you.
The data is stored in the meter not the IHD, Most of the IHDs are powered by USBs a solution might be either to use a USB extension cable from a convenient socket (you can get 5m cables quite cheaply) or use a USB power bank.
I know it's been a while but did you find the answer you were looking for?
