Hi everyone. Any hope for an IHD if you've moved homes and the former owner did not leave the IHD behind? I only found out I have a smart meter after 3 months of moving in, meanwhile I had been dutifully sending meter readings 🙄.
Oh no! You've no idea how often that happens. XD
It won't work for them anyway and it's supposed to remain at the place it's set up for. If you have a chat with customer service, they can arrange for another one to be sent out in the post.
Just another guy passing by... The unknown tech way...

I think you can ask customer service to send you one out in the post for free. It might take a few days to arrive though. Once it arrives, there'll be instructions in the box that explains how to set it up. You'll need to get customer service to help you out with the process, as they'll need to authorise the device to join your Home Area Network.
Which IHD you'll get mainly depends on the type of meters you have - but you should automatically receive the right type for your setup.
Apparently not. I'm told that they didn't have one in stock when engineer fitted the meter and they are not obliged to send me one now. Begs the question - what is the point of having a smart meter if I can't track my spend/usage. In light (no pun intended) of the news about energy price hikes I am extremely worried about putting my heating on. Very stressful.
You're not out of luck yet. I've had a chat with my friend Blastoise186 and he's given me his thoughts on this:

In cases where the engineer didn't have one handy, I would imagine that the engineers report would make a note of it, so that you could ask for one to be sent out in the post later.
I can understand why a supplier might be out of stock initially, but that still means the customer hasn't technically used up their free "allowance" yet, so to speak. Maybe, see if you can get a moderator to take a look, they might be able to help out with this one. You seem to know the moderators there pretty well too.
Based on that, I've set a tag on this thread to let Beki and Hannah know that you're waiting for them to stop by. I'll keep an eye on this thread as well, in case I can help any further.
Hey @debbyk, Beki here! 👋 (thanks for the tag @theunknowntech)
We can definitely get one sent out for you, especially if you've never had one before. Would you pop me your account number, full name and address in the private message so I can get one requested for you. 🤗

They ***are*** obliged to send you one. Please let us know when you get it; would be nice to hear back to see how you get on with it😉

I spoke to the previous owners, they will send it if they find it. They never used it so probably took it by mistake. I popped an email to customer servie, they said they are not currently sending them out but will put me on the list once they do start.
No worries. Getting hold of the existing IHD would be the easiest solution, since it should still be paired to the meters and will probably only need a quick recharge.
If the meters are SMETS2 however, then you can have up to four IHDs paired at once, so there's plenty of space for another one if needed.
