Realtime consumption data

Having had a SMETS1 smartmeter installed some years ago, and having switched suppliers a few times since, I am now pleased to see that E.ON is reading my meter through the DCC as it has finally been migrated and updated to SMETS2 specification.

Hi,
That's good to hear. Your meter is actually still a SMETS1 as the only way for it to be a proper S2 would be to physically replace the meter itself. The firmware updates mainly just allow the meter to be migrated to DCC and operate like an S2 by replicating most of the functionality but not quite all of it. The only functionality that isn't replicated though is really just the deep technical stuff that hardly anyone will notice.
Real-time usage data is another story however. For that to work, it relies on you having an In-Home Display with CAD (Consumer Access Device) capability, which is not present in all IHDs. SMETS1 IHDs in particular, were less likely to have it than SMETS2 IHDs. Without this, it's impossible for any app to pull real-time data (even your supplier can't do it). I have known one or two suppliers experiment with providing the feature as a built-in thing in their platforms, but it proved unreliable and was later removed. It's unknown as to whether any supplier is likely to revisit it anytime soon.Just another guy passing by... The unknown tech way...

@Richtea78 I'm afraid that I have to agree with you. I've got switched to e-on a few months ago and had a smart meter installed by e-on just last week. I've been disappointed with the data that I can get on the app/portal though. My parents are on Octopus and they get updated readings every 30 minutes, which, whilst it isn't real time is so much better than every month.
