Prepayment card help

Hi we are moving into a flat next week and have been informed that they have a prepayment card meter for their gas. I have never had one of these before so have no idea how they work. I just assumed that we would need to give the meter reading to eon once we move in. Do we use the same card the previous owners used or do we need to get a new one? I thought as it was paid for in advance we would use the same one but reading some of the discussions on this forum l guess that is not the case?

Any advice would be most welcome.

You'll need to set up a new account and get new keys/cards. Please don't use the old ones as they're linked to the previous customer. E.On will be able to advise on what to do with them, but you'll need to give them a call to set things up so that you take control of the supply. You'll also need to submit meter readings as well, since they get your account up and running.

If there's a debt on the meter, this will need to be wiped as well - you're not responsible for someone else's debt. If you accidentally pay any of it off, don't panic. Simply report it to customer service and they'll make sure you get a refund and that the debt is wiped out. Personally, I'd also definitely recommend switching to Pay Monthly as it'll be a LOT cheaper and you won't need to worry about running out of credit. Switching over is free and even if the meter needs to be replaced, you won't have to pay for that either as it's part of the service.

Once that's done, feel free to shop around for the best deal. The market is pretty volatile right now, but you might still be able to get something nice. But yeah, definitely best to switch to Pay Monthly first! :)

    Hey there! Beki here!

Sounds like you will definitely need to set up a new account and at that point we will send you a new card which will wipe any debt off the meter (if there is any!). At the moment, we are not exchanging prepayment meters for credit meters unless there is a noted vulnerability in the property. This should soon change though and exchanges will be able to be requested in the near future. 🙂

You can send a message across to us on Facebook (@eonnext) or Twitter (@eon_next) and one of our Energy Specialists will be able to help you with all the above.
