Sorry @meldrewreborn I replied from page 2 and hadn't seen your post yet, it's an interesting take. I agree that gas might be more efficient in terms of cost however I wonder how much of an impact that would have in terms of the CO2 emissions though.

Given that 40% of our electricity is generated using gas, and a lot of that thermal energy is lost in the process (so its inefficient), using gas to power a heat pump at the point of delivery and using 40% less gas than the most efficient gas condensing boiler (so efficiency is circa 139%) I'd reckon the impact would be minimal, if any at all. The forecasts are that we'll still be burning gas to generate electricity for many years - particularly as the demand for electricity is going to increase so much. Using a gas heat pump also reduces electricity distribution infrastructure upgrades
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
Burning any 'fossil' fuel at point of use will always be more efficient than burning it remotely and then transmitting 'lossy' energy over long distances and then using it.
For the same reason, if you factor in the amount of gas used in electricity production, transmission losses, round trip efficiency and heat wasted in charging for any battery-based system, it turns out that a second (or more) hand, well maintained ten year (or older) diesel car is actually fractionally more climate friendly than an EV and a hell of a lot cheaper in terms of TCO
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
Try telling that to Emperor Khan. Most of his supporters don't have cars so they don't give a fig about motorists. But he's up for re -election next year and might be getting a tad worried.
His policies will reduce the costs of buying an old diesel car because people in outer London will sell up rather than pay £12.50 per day to use them.

Looks like Sir S is having a gentle word in Mr K's shell like. 🤔 😯
