I've just signed up to join E-on. I believe I'll need a smart meter. Will that have to be installed before I can transfer from my old provider?

No - your old meter will do fine but they will try to convince you to take a Smart meter ASAP.

However, the way their system works may mean a wait - installers move from are to area on a schedule.
