This bit of research from Cornwall Insight paints a rather more realistic picture, one in which bad debt by customer and businesses could bring down some suppliers.

A good read, that. There are those who may dispute these things, but you only need to look at Companies House returns to see how things really are. I don't think there is a single retail energy supplier that wouldn't have been declared bust by now if it wasn't for mitigating circumstances and some quite heavy-duty pleading that they are still going concerns. People keep saying these companies are worth billions and making millions...but if the creditors called in their debts...game over.
