Hello, I live alone in a 1 bedroom apt but my bills have been coming up to £150 and keep increasing every month. This month it went to £214. Aside the fact that this is an already higher charge given my circumstances, I expected my February bill to reduce as I travelled and all my appliances were off including heating, switches etc. Is this an accurate/normal charge?

How do you pay for your energy - Direct debit/prepayment or after bill is received. Was the bill you're mentioning estimated or calculated from accurate readings? Do you have a smart meter, do you have both gas and electricity ?

I believe you can use the Bright app to get to your half hourly meter readings going back months. You may be able to spot a trend in the data to explain your bills.
If you look at your consumption has it increased recently (over last 6 months?). Your bills shouldn't be being estimated as you have a smart meter presumably supplying correct readings - but errors have been known. Are your readings on your statements showing as SMART? -

Level 512-03-24Also to add that when I moved into the apt in September, my bill was £400 which I disputed and they said the account was a business and they've changed to domestic now. But this is still very high in my opinion!

Level 7812-03-24Hi @mzmai It might be worth letting the forum know what method you use to heat your apartment (storage etc), and duration it's on. Likewise how is your hot water heated (immersion heater, etc), and how long per day it's on. An indication of what tariff you are on would also be helpful. It'll help to reduce the guess work.

Level 9112-03-24I've put your data into a spreadsheet and calculated what your actual bills were in the appropriate months, using national averages and current Jan-Mar pricing, even in other months. So this cost data is illustrative rather than totally precise.
You can see how your consumption has changed and how its gone higher in the winter period. Since the period covered is the worst for energy consumption and prices are due to come down you are paying too much and I would demand a direct debit review and a refund of your current balance. If though you do that now they'll use current pricing to do the maths - but prices are dropping 10%+ in April. So if you do it now, get your DD dropped by 10% in April through your online account, or else wait to April before you contact them. Have a current reading to hand whenever you contact them.

I use 4.5 to 5 kWh per day but that's with no heating hot water or cooking (all gas). Your daily average consumption will likely fall back in the summer months to a similar level. I'm in a 3 bed house with 2 occupants - you should, with careful use, get your consumption lower than mine!Last edited by meldrewreborn; 12-03-24 at 12:57.
