Should we think more about the cost of heating hot water?

    Hey @GSV3MiaC

That's an interesting one, was it a big job connecting to mains water supply or an easy fix I hope?

@Indyk_EONNext Was not too bad, Severn Trent had the pipe in the road outside, just the previous occupants had never paid to have it connected. What was a lot more trouble was persuading Severn Trent (Cardiff Billing team) that were were NOT connected to mains sewers and they should STOP billing us for sewage..
When they told their local rep to come and check, he just laughed and laughed - no mains sewers within 5 miles.

Just Got my water bill - its a lot more than it was last year - surprise surprise! I should be pleased that my usage is approximately 188 litres per day, compared to efficient similar households @ 290 litres per day, and average similar households @ 476 litres per day.

Water bills are very confusing in my area (Affinity) because usage is charged backwards looking on readings, while standing charges are billed in advance for next 6 months. But in a full year at current prices my water bill will be about £390. I think that's quite a bit. And my usage is quite low - apparently. However on my computed bill 57% goes in standing charges, so if i used a lot more water my bills would go up , but nothing like in proportion to the extra usage, but it also mean that if i cut my usage further i will not save a great deal. Others, who use a lot more, would be able to target bigger savings.

This means that not only should we think about the cost of heating water, but also about the cost of the product itself. Saving water, whether hot or cold, seems to be a sensible move.

Northumbrian Water calculate my bills in the same way as yours. My monthly DD increased by £5 per month in March, (even though I'd used less water during the previous six months), because of the increases in the standing charges and price per unit. My annual cost at the current rate will be about £330 which is apparently about the average for this area. I'm anticipating another increase in September because I'm using a bit more water with having to water the garden plants more in the current dry weather. I use a watering can and not a hosepipe to use as little extra water as possible. I agree we should think about saving water, both to save money on our bills and to prevent future shortages of such a precious and vital commodity.

Thank you for sharing @meldrewreborn it's definitely one to watch for sure! I never really understand my water bill but have been having a good look at the break down and all the other additional costs makes you realise what else you pay for besides just water no matter how much you limit your water usage the other costs wont go anywhere.

@Tommysgirl Its all gone up my end Severn Trent, it's increased by about £7 they are under taking one of the biggest investments in infrastructure to serve me and the community and to do this they need to gradually increase bills over the next 5 years but apparently my bills are amongst one of the lowest in England that they'd like to continue 💦

the increases for the 5 year period are front loaded - so big increase this year lower increase year 2-5. Hopefully they stick to that. Do you think with your Eon Next background you are more accepting of what the water company claims?

@Anasa_EONNext Do you think “returns on investment” really means dividends to shareholders?

@meldrewreborn spot on! I was going to mention that its like that with electric and gas and all the hidden bits we don't really think about. Like the up keep of the meter and working on the infrastructure that will mean lower prices in the future we have to deal with a lot of this when our standing charge increases and really have to understand the why behind and then try to educate our customers about paying for pipes etc so 100% I get it and why its has to do be done where as my other half would just see ' price increase, they are making a profit' Same with Council Tax I guess and all the other little add ons until I was viewing my own bill and really looked at the add ons I had no idea what the breakdown was - hopefully will see some lower increases in year 2-5🤞

Fab post and great to have that awareness 💯 I'm still learning everyday! I will learn to understand the actual calculations behind the water bill one day!

Just a few of my thoughts on hot water heating - We are a family of 3 with a large, well insulated tank.

After some experiments a few years ago, we've settled on the hot water being fired up every other day to heat up the tank. Only occasionally do we need a boost - in winter when colder incoming water, lower ambient and multiple baths a day (we usually shower).

This resulted in reduced consumption overall (vs running every day). In summer, hot water is the only use of gas, so easy to isolate. We now use 8 kWh every 2 days vs 6 kWh every day.

The losses in firing up the boiler, heating it up, heating the primary loop up etc. are significant. Plus the boiler is operating in a very poor regime for efficiency - I estimate less than 50% efficiency in heating water (for a '95%' efficient boiler!). It would make sense to use the electric immersion instead on overnight 6.7p electricity, but would need a time switch fitting and also not sure of its longevity given it's meant as a boost / backup.

Poor boiler efficiency is also present for combi boilers - they rely on low return temps for condensation to occur - in water heating, that's not possible. They also have extra losses if they are in 'comfort' mode where they try and keep warmed up ready for hot water, wasting a huge amount of energy.

Finally, it's worth drilling in the reality that every time you use the hot tap you are using heated water - even when it's coming out cold! That water has been heated at your expense, just gone cold since then. (I suppose in winter you can argue that the heat lost might make its way into the habitable space and reduce heating bills slightly...)
