Earth Day is a yearly event in support of environmental protection. The First Earth Day was held in 1970, on April 22nd - Yesterday, Earth day turned 55 🌍
Events for Earth Day are coordinated globally in more than 193 countries. The last theme for Earth Year was "Planet vs. Plastics" with the aim to raise awareness of the harms of plastic pollution for human and planetary health and this year the theme for Earth Day is "Our Power, Our Planet" Inviting everyone around the globe to unite behind renewable energy and to triple the global generation of clean electricity by 2030 ⚡
This Earth Day, let's commit to harnessing renewable energy to build a healthy, sustainable and prosperous future for us all.
There was a global event which encourages people to turn off their lights for 60 minutes at 8:30pm on the 22nd April to raise awareness about big issues affecting the environment 💡 The night also saw some of the world's most famous buildings plunged into darkness for one hour - this includes The London Eye, Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Westminster in London, the Liver Building in Liverpool and Stirling Castle in Stirling.
So, what has Earth Day achieved?
Within a few years of the first Earth Day in 1970, the US Environmental Protection Agency had been set up, and several environmental laws - such as the Clean Air Act - had been established or significantly strengthened. ☁
More recent events have included planting hundreds of millions of trees, supporting farmers with sustainable agriculture practices, and starting climate literacy projects around the world. With hopefully many more achievements on the way! 🌳
