Notification to upgrade to a smart meter due to RTS switch off
-
Hi, hope someone can help. My flat has one meter, 2 supply points and 2 consumer units. I take 4 readings, 2 are for the normal day and night rates and the other 2 are for a heat (off peak) rate (storage rads and hot water). One of these last 2 readings is always zero. I have received a notification regarding the RTS switch off and suggesting that I need a smart meter. Can anyone tell me whether a smart meter can handle this situation while still sustaining the existing billing arrangements/separate rates for day, night and off peak heat. Kind regards, Rich.

You are not the first with this type of question, but a photo would help give you a full answer. The likelihood is that its all doable. By the way are you satisfied that your billing has been correct all the way through - are you getting off peak prices on the supplies you should have.Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless. -

Picture attached, I don’t have a full picture of the plastic box cabinet and I am not at the flat again for a few months….I don't remember there being any other boxes in there such as an RTS switch.
as far as I know I am being charged correctly…Day and Night rates plus a heat rate which is in between the other two rates and is for the storage heating/hot water.

@retrotechie came up with a solution to a similar setup recently but I can't find it> Hopefully @retrotecchie can point us to the right one. -
@WizzyWigg found it for me- he's such a nice person you know.

Thanks so much guys, I have read the thread now and think I may be partially with it.
I am guessing that from the picture I sent that you are happy that the meter is an RTS one, is that the case?
in any event it may be worth me taking the offer of a new meter anyway as I am fed up that I pay so much for water and heating when most of the power consumption is in fact overnight and should be at a lower E7 rate!
I already have a separate consumer fuse box for the storage heaters ( not sure if this includes the water heating at standard times), so from what has been said I think I just need that consumer unit to be fed in parallel with the existing consumer unit from the new single meter. The thread says - “that is something a meter engineer can do. Is that the default that the Eon engineer is likely to use or do I need to request it at installation time?
Once done, I am left with no control on the heating (and I guess the standard hot water heating times). I would like one 60A timer for the 4 storage rads but where exactly would this be in the grand scheme of things, could it be just inserted next to the consumer units inside the property?
in respect of the water I am not sure how this is controlled but if it is in the meter I assume I would need to add a separate timer at the switch point next to the tank. The boost for hot water seems to be a separate switch and heating element at the top of the tank,so I think nothing changes here, if the switch is ON boost occurs at standard rate for the time of day.
one final bit of advice I may also need is what type of meter I will need in terms of terminals.
sorry for all the questions but I know very little about electrical supply/meters etc….but I am most grateful for your kind help, it is much appreciated……Rich. -
@meldrewreborn
hi again, just noticed this in the thread I was referred to by @WizzyWigg.
A five terminal meter will give you just the separate timed feed for the water otter and the heating, but if you want boost, you are better off with a regular 4 terminal non-switching meter and a more up to date timing system.
Does this mean I could use a 5 terminal system, if so where is the timer/timed element in the solution.
just thought if this is the case I could just add a timer for the water heater if I wanted to vary the times for the water be different to the heating as I am not to worried about varying the ON times for the storage rads.
perhaps there are 2 different solutions here for me to consider?…Rich. 🫤 -
@Rich29. It’s @retrotecchie that you need and due to a demolished pole in his village all there are incommunicado. I’m a numbers man and in the past a keen DIYr, and while competent in my own home, I only proffer ideas in these situations. I’m sure he’ll be along soon, well in a few days at least. Good job it’s not really urgent yet!!

@meldrewreborn
Oh dear, a lot of people hoping it’s sorted soon!
yes, not urgent so no worries.
