Charging double the DD agreement

I have a debt with eon from a previous house, when we moved to new house we had a new supplier and we contacted eon and had them send us a letter to clear off remaining debt.
    This was july 2024

After the letter we contacted and agreed a 200 a month direct debit for the 21st of each month.

Checking my bank statement's I can see that eon next has been taking the agreed money on the agreed day.

However another company "previous credit solutions" started taking 200 a month on or around the 4th-5th of every month since I started paying Eon next.

I only noticed this today when they took another 200.

My question is why and how did some third party debtor get authorised to take a further 200 a month from my bank without my knowledge ? Have my rights been violated ?

I have paid 2600 now which I think was about the debt amount anyway.

None of the payments were missed, no letters received, not a word or email from eon or this PCS company who collects debts for eon.

Will be phoning in the morning but just wanted to share this in the hope of an answer.

Now that I think back I am not even sure if it was eon directly or pcs who setup the payment plan with us but either way 2 charges are being made on 2 separate days of the month

We were paying on a top up meter after a forced meter change in the old place so we had no bank transfers with eon of any kind, so both of these payments are surely a direct result of setting up 1 payment plan of 200 per month. It cant be right.

and some questions for you. How much was the debt from the previous address? Are you paying eon next £200 and PCS £200 and your new supplier another amount each month for your current energy consumption?
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.

@meldrewreborn thank you for responding, we checked figures and remember the debt was around 3500 when we moved, as the payplan was 18 months at 200.

In the previous place we were already paying this debt gradually through the meter with an increased rate.

Yes we are currently paying ovo for our electric in the new place with monthly payments whilst paying eon 2 times for a debt.

for amounts to be taken from your bank account by direct debit, at some stage you have to have provided the authority for the supplier to do so. It’s a simple process to contact your bank and stop the direct debit completely or to recover amounts taken improperly by invoking protections under the direct debit guarantee, which has to be notified to the customer before any DD commences. So there are remedies open to you here, but you would need to be clear of your facts before taking action as you might be defaulting on a debt recovery plan if you get it wrong.
So I would find the original documentation - whether physical or electronic - relating to this debt recovery, and then speak to them, evidently if the agreement was for pounds X for Y months then any deviation from that by them is completely out of order. Advice from Citizens Advice might also help you.

This could be a simple mistake and rectified very quickly, but also has the potential to get messy and legalistic. Tread carefully on this. Once you are absolutely sure of you facts you can stop one of the direct debits, reclaim incorrectly debited amounts ( all through your bank) and put in a formal complaint. This is a dreadful situation for you to be in and double debt recovery payments will doubtless be making your financial situation significantly worse.

Establish whether your debt has now been paid off in its entirety taking into account what you have paid to both parties. If this is confirmed by Eon Next when you've spoken to them, ask them for some kind of confirmation as well before you start unilaterally stopping DD instructions.

@Mailman we have checked the eon account on website, it shows the final debt as around 3500, then it shows our £200 payments beginning july but the transaction history also shows that within a month prior to the the first payment, the total jumped from 3500 to 7100 seemingly before we made the DD agreement ? and the existing balance on the EON account website does not even reflect the existence of PCS payments ! the pcs payments are not even deducting from my bill, only the eon next payments are.

The PCS payments seem to go into PCS pockets and nobody else at this point. Something is very wrong here.

    I am being robbed blind.

UPDATE: After talking to EOn on the phone, the woman seemingly could not confirm or deny anything and instead told me to speak to past due credit solutions.

She put me straight through to them.

So I spoke to james at PDCS and for a while he thought everything was fine and not in error and it was a very frustrating long discussion until he realised that we only gave our details to one company then there is no way 2 company should be charging. He checked back in records to discover that we had setup our payment plan with EON next, and that 2 weeks later eon next sent our details to PDCS to also debit my account in error.

He also saw that the debt was 3500 and then doubled to 7100 after the payment plan was made, indicating that both companies had somehow merged their versions of the account debt into one on EONS records.
He has told me to contact eon and tell them of their mistake

What a nightmare. I thought I was well shot of these clowns long ago.

Essentially I have been paying 400 a month since july 2024 to clear a final bill debt of 3500 and now i have 4500 left to pay lol.

I just wanted to see that statement in writing because of how absurd and illogical it sounds.
