Electricity Meter Issue

Hi, I have already sent a mail to eon regarding this matter, but would like maybe some opinions, I have an old dial meter (which I hate) so I will post images of the last four meter readings I have taken from Oct 24 to Jan 25.

    So for
    Oct 24 - 218.9 kWh Total electricity charges £70.33 - meter read 5505
    Nov 24 - 33.7 273.0 kWh Total electricity charges £82.37 - meter read 5778
    Dec 24 - 1192.0 kWh Total electricity charges £287.55 - meter read 6970
Jan 25 not submitted yet. - meter read 6050

I had thought something was up with Decembers electricity usage as I hadn't done much different from previous months, but the image I've taken today has thrown me a curve ball, something just aint right????

Appologies for the picture quality, I only realized by using the flash that would improve the image, I had though it would reflect previously.

Your numbers match the dials, so I agree with your readings. I suspect what is happening is that the gears that drive the dials are probably a bit worn out and something is jumping a tooth somewhere.

FIRSTLY, that meter is at least years, if not decades, out of certification date and it needs replacing. In fact that meter was approved in 1972 and had a working life of 15 years, meaning it needed replacing in 1987 and would probably have needed replacing twice since!

SECONDLY, when you submit a January reading, they'll assume your December reading was probably an error and just recalculate the bill accordingly.

Contact customer services and get a replacement meter ASAP.

Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.

@retrotecchie Thank you so much, I have already sent the same information to Eon, still awaiting a response, I don't actually submit my meter reads till the last day of the month, so I'll be checking again on the 31st.

Unfortunately I've had technicians round twice to tell me they can't fit a smart meter, that meter is in the basement and the gas is in my bedroom 3 floors up, they refused to install a smart meter just for the electric meter, which confuses me, as I would assume if I only had electric, they would fit a meter, or if I had my gas with another energy supplier, then they would surely fit one, but they won't if I have both??

@retrotecchie will doubtless confirm this isn't a matter of choice for the supplier - your meter needs to be replaced for a whole host of reasons. We are told that suppliers s now only have smart meters - traditional meters are not fitted any more - whether that's actually true is debatable. Whether the replacement would work in smart mode is completely irrelevant. You must insist upon a replacement ASAP.

Correct. The main requirement of the metering regulations is that any metering device should be capable of accurately recording consumption which, from what @Praxine has told us, isn't happening. That rule trumps any debate over smart or non-smart.

Accurate metering is enshrined in law. The necessity to have a smart meter isn't, to the best of my knowledge.

The supplier must install a new meter. They should and probably will install a smart meter, regardless of whether they think it will work or not. They can't choose not to replace a faulty meter just because they think it might not communicate. The rules say it must accurately record consumption, which a non-communicating meter will happily do.
