Good morning all from a cold, sunny, snowy Aberdeenshire.
I am biting the bullet and buying my wife a PHEV car. Yes we do have electricity, indoor toilets and hot water up here.
I am assuming I will need a smart meter installed to get the half hour charging units.
I assume then that I can apply for the Next Drive tariff.
My questions are thus.....
Will a smart meter function up here......ie will it be able to connect.
Can the technology be tested BEFORE it is installed.
If it doesn't work can I still get the cheap rates?
Aberdeenshire....that's almost on the edge of the Arctic Circle!
I can't say for sure whether LRR will give you the connectivity you need as it's a bit hit and miss in some areas of Scotland.
The thing is, if your neighbours have working smart meters then you will likely find no problems. LRR is a bit less reliant on individual cell towers and can in theory provide better coverage over a wider area, but any system will have 'not spots'.
Ask around the neighbours is my advice.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
Welcome. Connectivity in the north relies on radio transmission, in the south its cellular.
@retrotecchie is my go to guy on the connection pre testing, if you have near neighbours , try asking them if their smart meters function fully?
if it doesn’t work then no you will not get the ideal time of use benefit, and only something like economy 7 tariff might provide some benefit. Best to make sure the meter supplied will support that fall back option.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
Mr Meldrew......I don't believe it.
Well I can. Switch to a smart meter and get all the fancy stuff....but no it doesn't connect....so you can't get cheap rates.
you can get economy 7 without a smart meter, but there are upsides to getting a smart meter that you don’t get from a traditional meter. Not many I grant you, but nice to haves. I got my consumption down to 1600kWH per annum prior to getting smart metering installed, and I’m not anticipating any further efficiency now that I have them. But whether the benefits to the UK as a whole from them justifies the gross cost resulting from their use, I’m still in the anti camp.
Yes, ordinary Economy 7 will give you a cheaper night rate. Not as good as an EV tariff, but with a PHEV, there's not a huge battery to charge so the savings aren't that much. You will likely still need a new meter to give you two-rate and it will be a smart meter whatever happens. If it can't communicate, it's still Economy 7. If it can, you're then good to go with the Drive options 👍
