The latest quarterly report on smart meter installations is out today here:

    https://assets.publishing.service.go...ics_Report.pdf

Slightly more meters were installed in Q3 then in Q2 but the general trend is still downwards.
5.4% of electricity smart meters were dumb, but the situation was much worse with gas meters - 0ver 15% were not reporting correctly. Personally I feel there is less utility in a smart gas meter than an electricity meter, but it does point to a particular weakness in gas smart meter robustness.

95% of smart meters installed were in domestic settings.

There's a simple fix for the problem of over 15% of gas meters not reporting properly - from the point at which a gas meter no longer sends readings, the customer is not responsible for the cost of any gas used until the gas meter is functioning correctly again. The cost should be covered by the Government/DCC and the supplier, that might speed up the reduction in dumb metering.
After all, the customer is footing the bill for smart meters, the least they should expect is something that works, although we're effectively paying for OFGEM and that doesn't work!
