Hello all
We have a 26 year old convential boiler with the feeder tank in the loft and the immersion heater in a cupboard in the bedroom. We will be leaving the house empty next week and as the temperature is set to fall we are worried about the pipes freezing.
Would it be okay to turn the water off and still keep the heating on at frost mode or would this cause any damage.
Thank you
Carole
if the pipes in the loft are properly insulated , the frost forecast isn’t too severe or prolonged you should be fine. My preference is to lock the thermostat at around 10 Celsius and leave the heating on. You get most of the savings with virtually no risk. And it takes less time to heat up when you return.😊

what we are worried about is can you leave the heating on and turn the water off so the house stays warm but mitigates any potential water loss if a pipe were to freeze.
If pipes burst they will release some water, whether its clean water will depend upon the pipe. If the main pipe isn't turned off then the escape of water will be much much greater. Its a personal choice whether you want to bother.
Also we all know that heating systems can break down. Its entirely possible that this can happen while you're away. Then if the weather were particularly severe, your pipes might well freeze and then burst. If you are really worried you should drain the heating and any other systems completely. This will then necessitate a refill when you return before you can actually gaet any heat from the system in a quite cold house. Its why most people would just not bother, in fact they wouldn't even identify it as a risk.
