I don’t think that that article would persuade me to compute my own bill.
I do think that OFGEM could simply the conversion from volume to kWh by rolling all the fixed elements into one factor leaving just the reading difference and a caloric value (incorporating metric or imperial adjustment) involved in the calculation.
When it comes down to it consumers need only check that the readings and the tariff is correct on their bills - if so the bill should be correct too.

It sort of doesn't surprise me in one respect. Playing with tinfoil in the electricity cupboard did slightly worry me. 😳
Sadly we've just had 2 more houses lost to explosions up here, along with loss of lives. Admittedly probably gas related but something must have triggered them off.
