With the switch of RTS Eon tried to fit a smart meter but could not as the input cable to the meter was multicore and apparently it must be solid core. We live in a flat, small block 24 flats over four floors. The network supply terminates in a distribution box on the ground floor and each meter in individually fed with a cable, in our case that is a cable running from the ground floor to the 4th floor. From the meter the supply is connected to the flat fuse box. Our management company states that we our individually responsible for the feed cable from the ground floor - I think they are wrong and it is their responsibility - who is right
Everything prior to the meter is the responsibility of your Distribution Network Operator, although in your situation the fact that the DNO disconnect is then distributed to each meter individually within the building may well be the owners responsibility, but it certainly isn't yours!
Meter feeds are normally stranded, not solid core. However, the age of the building and the type of wiring used may not conform to current standards.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
Is there a supply fuse below the meter? If so it might be that the DNO is responsible, not you or the management company (even if the management company were responsible they'd only bill the costs back to you in your service charges - so little real benefit to you).
Sounds like another one for @retrotecchie. I might need to think about commission of some sort.
Edit
@retrotecchie got in before me - just!
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
@retrotecchie Having one fuse covering 24 flats doesn't seem that sensible to me. That means cutting the supply to all 24 flats just to fit a smart meter in one.
Management companies always seem to have sloping shoulders, but worse, their propensity to speak truth is rather limited in my experience.
I'd imagine it was one fuse per flat (most likely 60A) but whether the fuse is adjacent to each individual meter, or whether there are 24 fuses in the meter room and the fused feeds are taken to the meter, we don't know. The disconnect/fuse should be as close to the meter as possible.
If the meter has the fuse co-located, then EVERYTHING prior to the fuse is the responsibility of the DNO, including the wiring.
