Hi all

I got a new smart meter installed 13th June, however it is unable to get any signal to send readings automatically so I have to manually take them.
The reading noted on the new meter was 0000 and as of 25th July, it is reading 2654 kWh

My past readings on my old meter averaged about 6.5-7 kWh per day
This month’s reading is averaging 55 kWh per day

Since 25th July to today, the reading has shown 50kwh so around 7.5kwh average over the week which seems normal again

The creep test showed no movement

I am suspect that the meter didn’t in fact start at 0000 but because that is what is written on the white tag, Eon are saying that the reading is correct even though it’s a totally crazy number. I don’t want to call someone in and get charged the call out fee if they are going to do the tests and find no issue (as the past week has looked normal) but I don’t know how to dispute this charge since it’s really far fetched and out of normal range

See if you can lift the usage data since the install date. A few of us use the Bright app and find it reliable. Also do you have a functioning IHD as that will reveal historical usage? I would also double check that your smart meter is or is not connecting to the DCC via the Citizens Advice website.

Thank you- I tried this and did the setup with Bright but it says my meter point number is not eligible for this service which could be that I don’t have a smart meter?

the meter that is installed is a Kaifa MA120
I was also not provided with an IHD

The DCC link says it can’t find my meter

Get a torch and just recheck your electric meter again. Make sure the figure of 2654 is NOT actually 265.4 which would be in line with what your previous consumption rates were. If you also wear glasses (like me) its very easy to miss the decimal. If the figure of 2654 is correct then you have used more juice in 42 days since the meter was installed than I use in 1 year.🤔

It may be a little while yet before your smart meter is enrolled on the DCC and smart meter readings should start being lifted on a monthly schedule.

Is your new smart meter showing on your account? Or is the old one still showing?

Lastly I would badger/complain Eon Next to explain why you did not receive an IHD to go with this smart meter? The IHD needs to be paired to your meter so possibly get Eon Next to provide another appointment for an IHD to be paired up at the premises. 👍

to answer both of your questions

yes I have the historical readings from the old meter which I have for the past 4 months
The problem I get from customer service is that they don’t seem to acknowledge this big jump in usage on the new meter is linked to the fact the new meter is installed and insist it must be an increase in usage which doesn’t even make sense…

I’ve asked why I wasn’t provided with an IHD to which they said I should use the Eon Next app. I never figured out how to get an IHD on this app and considering it had no WAN signal, I assumed it was just a missing feature

The new meter is showing up on my account and the serial number matches

At the moment, I am trying to get them to acknowledge there may be human error in documenting the start meter reading as 0000 when it was non-zero and I’ve sent a link to that previous thread with the same issue

Sounds like you've had a bit of a journey with your smart meter but have been reaching out in the right places!
I would love to know if you were able to get this resolved or a better understanding of what the usage jump was?

IHDs are not always left at the property for lots of different reasons, you can use the App to track your usage or something like the bright house App you mentioned.. did any of the apps work for you?

Hi @Poppy_EONNext, we had someone come round and fix the meter so now that it is communicating and was given an IHD. He also mentioned that the start reading was wrong and to wait a month for the bills to correct so just waiting on this now

It seems there might have been an error when the new meter was installed, possibly not starting at 0000 despite the tag showing it. You could ask Eon for a meter accuracy test to verify its setup and readings without committing to a call-out fee. Highlight the discrepancy in your usage pattern, especially how it normalized after 25th July, to support your case.
