So if you reckon that cost you 57p, your tariff rate must be £3.80 per kWh 🤣🤪 -
@Franny65
Yep that sounds like you've looked at your IHD and seen the cost of energy used PLUS your Standing Charge. 👴 -
Last year when I was testing my mini kettle, filled to the 1.0 litres line cost about 0.1 kWh, which at the 2024 price should be less than a tenth of what you first wrote.
Just now I tested my ordinary kettle, emptying and boiling from cold tap water in the ordinary way, at 2.15 kW until the ordinary stop when done,
through a plug in power monitor. To boil that 1.0 litre used 0.137 kWh.0.137 x 31 p = 4.3 p
By the way, its 1.0 litre line seems to be quite a long way off so I filled it to 1.0 litres from the cold tap using a measuring jug.
To get my costs down further, I had covered as much of the south-facing part of the roof as possible with ordinary silicon solar photovoltaics (more than ten years ago; all fully paid off now) and during this test in late January under imperfect hazy and partly cloudy sun, I got mostly 0.9 kW of free rooftop electricity, so I'd have to pay for about 3p of additional electricity to boil a litre today with that ordinary kettle. I still prefer my mini-kettle, which takes longer using a 0.9 kW heater element, which today at-best near lunchtime, is absolutely free.Last edited by wizzo227; 22-01-24 at 13:37.

@wizzo227
what is the standing charges because they are charging me 55p daily so the 57p for boiling a kettle 55p charges so I've only just noticed I'm being charged 55p daily is this correct? -
@Franny65
Your tariff includes a daily standing charge which is usually added on to your account at midnight each day, so your IHD will show that right away if you have it set to display daily £ and p. The electricity charges are accumulated as you use energy, so if your first use of the day is to make a brew, then that's why you see that amount on the display. Don't forget, your fridge or freezer will also be running overnight as will anything like your central heating controls or internet router or a clock on a microwave so that will all add a few pence to the total.Last edited by retrotecchie; 23-01-24 at 02:01.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons. -

The charge does vary from region to region and tariff.

Hey @Franny65 👋
The standing charges are added as a fixed daily amount that you have to pay, no matter how much energy you use. I can see members have provided you links that do have lots more helpful information but if you do have any further questions we'd be happy to help! 😊Knowledge is power, community is strength, and positive attitude is everything 💜
