£50 a day ?

We moved into a new property (rented) last week and everyday the meter has been going up by about £50??? It was with eon but we’ve changed to octopus yet the balance keeps going up and up and now after 6 days it’s on £350.

@Gina0001 Just to clarify. Are you on a prepayment meter? If so is it showing as £350 in credit?

@Gina0001
If it is a prepay meter in a previously rented property, did you take meter readings when you moved in and was there any outstanding debt showing on the meter. Even if the meter had no credit left on it, for all the time the property was vacant, it would have continued to accrue daily standing charges for the period the property was empty.
You will also need to check with the agent what the final meter reading was on the date the previous tenants vacated the property.
All charges due to the previous tenant are their responsibility. Any charges from the date you took on the tenancy are your responsibility. Standing charges accrued during the interim period are the responsibility of the property owner/landlord.
There is often a 'disconnect' between all the appropriate parties when it comes to change of tenancy and I'm willing to bet you may have 'inherited' previous debt. As long as you have all appropriate readings the day you move in, Octopus should be able to provide you with a 'reset' of any debt registers so your account starts from zero.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons. -
@retrotecchie thanks for this, this makes a lot of sense - it seems that exactly the case…
I will make the necessary calls tomorrow (again) and re stress to them the situation (whatever that may be)
thanks for some clarification and taking the time to reply ! -
@WizzyWigg sorry no that’s what’s accrued/owing from ‘useage’ in the one week here !!!
