Without a signal you would not have automated reading, up to date pricing information on your IHD, and no ability to participate in time of use tariffs (where prices change at short notice). No reason though , i think , not to have a simple EV tariff with low cost off peak energy. They'd probably have to change the meter as they can't update it remotely.
@retrotecchie. Is there any technical reason why a meter using mobile signals (as in southern UK) could not be installed instead?
the point is Eon Next and you are both reliant upon data passing both ways through the DCC pipe. Suppliers have virtually no ability to influence this so while they subject us all to the SM hype, if in reality the smart metering is not technically capable of working there is little they can do about it. You still have functioning meters capable of recording your consumption, just as the old ones did.
While I'm not a fan of smart metering, I do try to comment sensibly on where the cause of problems lies.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
