Secure Liberty Gas 200 Help With Reading and other smart meter stuff

@meldrewreborn Thanks once more for the response. I’m in Scotland in a village called Markinch in Fife. 30 mins drive from St Andrews and Dundee and 1 hours drive from Edinburgh approximately. So semi rural with countryside and hills nearby but not deep in the Scottish wilderness. I’m sure when I mentioned this before it was pointed out that if I’m within 25 mile radius of emergency services then their radio Comms can affect things. Surely though this would affect a heck of a lot of people and that they’d account for this. I’m just peeved that it’s not working as promised and I don’t see any of the benefits - namely automated readings and a competitive tariff for our EV. Also, the lack of detailed response and timescale to fix also irks me. Cheers

Without a signal you would not have automated reading, up to date pricing information on your IHD, and no ability to participate in time of use tariffs (where prices change at short notice). No reason though , i think , not to have a simple EV tariff with low cost off peak energy. They'd probably have to change the meter as they can't update it remotely.

@retrotecchie. Is there any technical reason why a meter using mobile signals (as in southern UK) could not be installed instead?

the point is Eon Next and you are both reliant upon data passing both ways through the DCC pipe. Suppliers have virtually no ability to influence this so while they subject us all to the SM hype, if in reality the smart metering is not technically capable of working there is little they can do about it. You still have functioning meters capable of recording your consumption, just as the old ones did.

While I'm not a fan of smart metering, I do try to comment sensibly on where the cause of problems lies.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.

No technical reason at all. It's a purely financial one. Mobile infrastructure needs a fair bit of investment and in sparsely populated areas without concentrations of mobile users, the return on investment is a poor one. Plus, with meters mostly being reliant on 2G/3G and no new services being installed as the older cellular systems are already being switched off and will be completely gone by 2032, there's no sense in putting anything in now. Newer meters will use 4G/5G but again, the investment won't happen if there isn't a large enough user base. But Vodafone won the contract for 4G/5G purely because they have a better coverage. But even rural areas may struggle. I would imagine that the Glenrothes area has fairly decent coverage. My phone doesn't struggle there at all.

Why they ever chose cellular communications over PLC is a complete mystery to me. If the electricity can get to the premises, then so can PLC.

Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.

@retrotecchie @meldrewreborn Great comments from you both. Appreciated. Vodafone signal here is excellent to confirm.

You could always try hassling customer services and insist on a 4G comms hub rather than a LRR version. Just because Arqiva are supposed to be handling comms up north doesn't mean the energy suppliers can't fit a 4G hub.

Hello there @Tek, thank you for coming over to the Community and sharing your experience. Sorry it's been a pretty pants one with your smart meters and Energy Specialists you've spoken to as well. I'll be sure to send some feedback to their leaders.

I was going to suggest the same as @retrotecchie. Sometimes, the engineer will leave notes suggesting that you'll need a dual band comms which will get picked up at some point and an engineer would visit to change it over. In this case, I can speed this up for you. If you send me a private message with your account number, full name and address, I can see if I can get this moving for you. 😊

@Beki_EONNext Thank you very much indeed! I’ll PM you with my details if that’s ok. This forum has been brilliant for advice and suggestions and getting things done! I really do appreciate it. @retrotecchie Thanks again too.

You're welcome. I hope you manage to get it sorted. I'll wave on the way past next time I'm passing Glenrothes!

@Tek You're very welcome. We've got a great group of members who are passionate about supporting people. It's so lovely to see and be a part of it! 😊

Let's see if we can get that comms hub upgraded to a dual band. Fingers crossed the smart team will pop this through! 🤞
