Under heading "Why have they (standing charges) increased so much recently?" Eon state “Many suppliers have closed in the last 12 months. This means E.ON Next and the other energy providers take on their customers so their gas and electricity supply isn’t interrupted. They also take on the extra share of the energy grid costs (and pass them on to their customers).”
However, if they take on extra customers each of them will be paying standing charges too. The charge per customer should remain the same. How can this be an excuse for raising standing charges?
when the other energy companies went bust the customers were moved to other suppliers with their credit balances but without the actual money. The costs of sorting out the mess fell on all of us via standing charges. Other elements like green levies are also collected via standing charges as well as distribution costs.
