It's been in the Twitterverse for years; companies claiming to have very nearly a 400 mile range on their electric vehicles ... but it looks like that Tesla may have finally done it! The Model 3 is launching in the UK pretty soon. In June, we should see the deliveries arriving! Okay... so it's not quite 400 miles, it's more like 394 miles but will it actually reach that amount, realistically?
Lovely looking car for sure, good range on a charge and no doubt ticks many green boxes.
Unfortunately with its cheapest model costing £42,000 this is, for me, going to way out of any future budget for an EV purchase (if indeed I ever go down this path). Never mind though a free bus pass looms for me within the next 12 months 😁
No. Firstly if it can do almost 400 miles on a full charge then it won't encourage infrastructure and secondly there is a very low percentage of drivers that would need to do a single stint that distance. Even 400 miles in my car that can do almost 600 miles on a full tank would demand at least 2 wee stops and a half decent meal break.
Real world driving in the UK, I suspect the actual range will be nearer 300 miles. The Tesla was not designed for typical European roads which aren't as straight or flat as in the USA.
I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder @Mailman, but personally I think Teslas are about the ugliest car out there. Well, apart from the Fiat Doblo of course.

Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
@retrotecchie I got quite excited that it was being launched in the UK in the hope that they might have tested it on our roads.
How do you get 600 miles out of your car?? Absolutely agree with the wee stops and coffee stops (having kids it's definitely a must) but imagine not having to charge at those stops because you could continue your journey A to B.
@Mailman Do you use public transport now? If not, would you use it when you get your bus pass?
I think the cost of new cars is very similar, and EV's aren't that much more in comparison really. There's lots of talk on the tweet about purchasing after the lease is up for the private market.
@retrotecchie How do you get 600 miles out of your car??
Very simple. Fill it full of diesel. 55 litre tank is about 12 gallons. 54mpg x 12 gallons = 648 miles range. But I lose a bit of mpg in the 25 miles or so until I get to a main road from my house 🤣🤣🤣
My favourite car used to average about 750 miles to a tank, which I really miss. I could fill it for about £25 too as it ran on cooking oil. Unfortunately cooking oil is 50% more expensive than diesel these days. Back then when diesel was a quid a litre, chip fat was about half of that.
Don't use buses atm. Would like to continue driving in the medium term to get to national trust properties that are difficult to get to via public transport. Currently drive a 10 year old VW Polo.
You should be good for another 5 then. Maybe 10 if it's a diesel.
My Skoda is now coming up 17 years old and with 193k on the clock, it's just about run in now. It has paid back all the FLC nearly twice over. A Tesla takes almost 13 years to break even. But I doubt very many will make it to that age and still be viable.

Yes am in no hurry to change it - it has very low mileage circa 33,000. Petrol ICE. Still runs well. 🍻
I have my eye on the Ora Funky Cat, I would need a mortgage to buy but I think they look so much prettier than Tesla's also I just love the name...Just taking the funky cat out for a spin 😆

@Mailman I know what you mean. Whilst public transport is generally good in towns and cities, when you want to escape to the country and visit these rural places, it becomes a lot worse. I also find it so expensive too - you won't need to worry about that soon though!
@retrotecchie That's a lot of cooking oil. It made my tummy flip for some reason looking at it!
I thought bringing out an electric vehicle with increased mileage might be enough to sway those people who were thinking about buying one?
What do you think the drawbacks are now?
