We had PodPoint do ours. I think like most of the big outfits they are fine for straightforward installs (ours was) but for anything out of the ordinary you are going to want to try a local electrician.
Main pain was basically doing the survey for them - pictures of protective earths on hidden water and gas pipes, gas meter, electric meter, consumer unit etc. and uploading them.
Provided your supply is unlooped with an 80A or higher DNO fuse and an isolator after the meter, then the normal approach is to split the tails with Henley blocks then feed a dedicated mini consumer unit with the protections for the EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment - you don't have a charger at home, the charger is part of the car, but that's details), avoiding the need to touch or interfere with the rest of the home installation. A fat cable then run from this CU to the EVSE wall box that the car plugs in to.
Anyone using a smart socket to switch the granny EVSE is braver than me and needs to be 100% sure the car isn't still charging when switched off.
Just bumping this up for information - I wonder has anyone had an install recently, if so did it go as smoothly as this or did you come across a few bumps in the road. I'm sure the install team would love to hear some feedback on how the process is working!
@geoffers am I right in thinking you have a charger at home? If so what was your experience of having it installed was it painless? Even if it wasn't through E.ON Next it would be good to hear from someone who has actually had a charger fitted at home!
At least 3 of my neighbours have them. But if you think I'm going to ask them to join the forum and post you can think again. Sorry!!!
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and think the smart meter programme is a waste of our money. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but Iβll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
