Greetings from a new community member.


I am a newish eon customer, take only electricity, am on the Next Flex tariff, have a smart meter, and have managed to download my user data from n3rgy.com.


I have pasted the data into Excel and are now trying to reconcile it with figures on my statement. Frustratingly, I can get very close, but am unable to exactly recreate the statement figures. Has anyone else mastered this?


Two questions. Can anyone confirm the following:

• A usage figure described as, for example, 19:00 would refer to the period 18:30 to 19:00.
• A statement period described as, say, 5th January to 3rd February, I should include all usage figures from 00:00, 5th January to 23:30 3rd February.

I am competent in Excel and think that I understand Next Flex, but I am getting something wrong somewhere.

Welcome to the forum. answers to your questions...... Yes that seems logical and no for the following reasons.

On your statement you will be able to see the readings used to calculate your bills. I really haven't a clue what time of day the company uses to take a reading, but as far as I am aware (and others will soon correct me if I'm wrong) automatic half hourly readings are NOT used for billing purposes, but instead a special command requests a reading for billing. When this happens i suspect is fairly random as it has to go through the DCC communication system where things usually happen quite quickly but are not guaranteed to do so, even if the supplier request is accurately scheduled - which it probably isn't. As there are millions of bits of data traffic going through, exact scheduling is likely not to be possible. Thus the billing reading and your half hourly automated readings will need a bit of adjustment to enable a totally accurate reconciliation, and this will differ from month to month.

If all you are interested is calculating your bills then you really don't need to worry about half hour readings. I've tracked my energy usage for over 20 years using spreadsheets, and daily or every few days is plenty.

Periodic averages, actual billing information (accurate to within a penny, every month) and watching trends is plenty enough information for my needs. Smart meters and half hour readings bring nothing to the party in my opinion. You can have too much data and without knowing exactly which reference points they use for billing, you'll end up causing more confusion than you will ever benefit from, in my opinion.

This obsession started when I set out to establish whether I was better off on Next Flex or on a standard tariff.

If I add up all of the half-hourly usages, they do indeed add up to the exact amount shown on the statement. So it does seem that the downloadable figures are used in preparing the statement. Its the peak/off-peak split that I can’t quite crack.

As suggested, perhaps, I should just shrug my shoulders and move on.

Next Flex is a standard tariff. I think you mean 'single rate' rather than economy 7/10.

Tricky one. Unless you sleep all day and are up in the off peak hours, or have an Economy 7 heating system or perhaps charge an EV overnight, most folks on E7 would be better off on a single rate deal.

To answer your bullet points

1. I see the data on the 'Bright' App matching what I use in HH periods. But the period listed for 1900 would refer to the energy used between 1900-1930 not sure about n3rgy.com but would assume the same.
2. That would be how I would see it as well. 👍

I just checked n3rgy,com and I believe we are both correct. So maybe leave spreadsheet as it was originally. Why not double check your data from Bright to be sure.

For me

Bright 1730 entry = usage from 1730-1800
n3rgy 1730 entry = usage from 1700-1730
