I signed up for the Energy Shift session on Monday and Tuesday and according to my readings, I hit the target (actually used less than was needed and have photos to prove it), but got an email yesterday saying that I hadn't hit the target so won't be getting paid any credit! Has this happened to anyone else?
Apparently so. The thing is, it's not just saving a bit of energy in the period allocated, but 'shifting' that energy usage to the period prior that seems to be key, rather than just 'saving energy' itself. If you usually only use a kWh or so every hour, you won't have a huge difference between one period and the next, but if you can actually move significant usage from the peak into the period before so the difference is more significant, that seems to be the thing that triggers a 'win'. Not just saving a few hundred watt hours.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
Hmm, that differs from what it says on the eon website and in the sign up emails - "Participating customers will be given a personal target based on their average daily energy use. All customers who successfully reduce their electricity use to hit their personal target will receive credit to their E.ON Next account." which makes it read as as long as you hit the target, you get the credit, not if you shift your energy to another time?
I know, the information is a bit confusing, but shifters seem to have had more luck than savers, it would appear. But the clue is in the name Energy Shift. The point is moving loads out of peak periods when capacity is tight, to periods of lighter usage, to try and balance demand on the grid more evenly across the day.
The scheme is paid for by the generators/National Grid themselves. If they can save having to bring another 20MW of near online expensive generation on stream to cope with the peaks, it saves them money. If they have to load shed because there isn't the capacity on the network, it prevents them getting fined.
The point of the energy shift last Monday and Tuesday was to hopefully prevent the need to light up two coal-fired stations.
