The standing charges are higher for non-DD payment methods, and the unit prices are slightly higher too. For a typical single fuel user, the difference is around £100-120 a year. For a higher user like you, possibly even more. If you have dual fuel, the difference is around £250 a year.
That difference is roughly two months fuel bills for me. Put another way, by paying by DD compared to other methods I effectively get a year's energy for the price of 11 months which is a saving not to be sniffed at.

Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
Likewise, no gas in my neck of the woods. Electricity at 34p per kWh for me is the most expensive way possible to heat a house. If I had gas, it would be a little cheaper, but still expensive compared to a year or two ago.
Luckily, I use heating oil which at the moment is a lot cheaper than gas. Works out at roughly 8p per kWh and no standing charges. The downside is having to buy my oil 'up front' twice a year at just north of £450 a time. The same oil delivery in January last year cost just over £500 so while gas and electricity prices keep on increasing, the oil prices are falling and that's working to my advantage.
The older type of storage heaters are fairly inflexible to control and often result in over heating of the home (at great cost).
More modern storage radiators have thermostatic electric controls which are much more accurate in releasing heat and thus cost a lot less to run. I would suggest looking into whether you can get these installed if they're not already. I understand thee billing has been corrected in another thread with much the same title.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
You are right, I should start looking into upgrading the system or adding that controller part somehow.
There was a glitch in the portal so my first thread flagged as "Incorrect usage" for some reason and did not show yesterday then after I posted it again here someone fixed it and replied to me there so I had to reply to her... so yeah I am posting in two places which is not so pleasant 🙂 sorry for that.
and thank you all.. still fighting on all fronts to see how this will end.
its new storage heaters I think which have their own supply to power fans to kick out the heat on command. You could start with just a few, using the old heaters as base heat and the newer ones as regulators.
I have the same issue, after three attempts so far they can't get the day text, rate and meter reading all right at the same time, the same with the night rate !!
