Need help - smart meter gone crazy?

    Hi
i am a very low user (electric) as I am at work a lot 😕

Typical usage is 30-50p per day of usage. Until Sunday 18th Dec that is. After being out all day, with just a standard fridge/freezer and small fish tank pump running I came home to face my smart meter saying usage of £1596!!!

    So now I’m wondering if:
A - meter has gone crazy
    B - I don’t understand my meter
C - dog had a massive party while I was out

Can anyone share any thoughts on what has happened?

    Many thanks
    xxxx

Did you look at the actual kWh rather than the cost? I have two Spaniels...even they can't party that hard.

At around 35p per kWh....that's probably more power than your supply fuse can handle. More energy than my house uses in a year.

    Summat wrong there.

Of course, if you read that figure off the In House Display....it's possibly rolled a 7. Have a look at your last bill, the full pdf version, or your last logged meter read. Compare that with the current kWh and do some back of envelope maths...

Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.

It was definitely showing as pence per day, now £ per day

I’ll check kw usage but am sure that it can’t be right - I just don’t want to make a fool of myself (any more than normal)

my Dobermann has 2 speeds - asleep and 100% so I wonder if he plugged himself in? Am sure he couldn’t compare to two spaniels though

£1596 at about 35p per kWh works out at 4500 kWh. If you were out for 10 hours, then each hour something would have been drawing 450kW. With a nominal supply voltage of 240v, that's a draw of 1875 Amps continuously which is rather a lot more than your maximum supply incoming fuse (100 Amp max) is rated for.

So, something somewhere is definitely telling you porkies.

Not even E.On Next's dubious billing computers would even attempt to charge you for that without someone raising an eyebrow.

I have been through my smart meter readings and kWh is pretty much the same everyday

in fact I panicked at the cost and have turned all my heating off so on the 18th (expensive day) kWh was 4.53, kgCO2 was 2.46 and cost was £1596

I’ll phone to see what eon say

    many thanks, Rainey

we usually advise email as you at least have supply. Put keywords in message title like smart meter giving impossible readings. In the text give your account details amp ask for a test meter to be installed, or better still a replacement.

one check you could do yourself is to turn everything off at the main fuse bow and see if the meter is still recording consumption.

    Hey @Raineyday,

This certainly seems a bit off 👀 can I ask were you looking at the readings on your actual meter or on the in home display? If it was the IHD then I would suggest taking your readings from the actual meter itself in the morning and then checking again in the evening to see if anything seems off with the meter itself. It sounds like your IHD has maybe had a bit of a moment and may need resetting!
