Just received an email about tomorrow's energy shift.

It says one hour and then says 5:00PM to 7:00PM.

Anyone know which is right?

Both. Save your target over a 1 hour period, between those two times.

Considering that they can't seem to get the calculations right for a simple one hour energy shift it doesn't seem likely that they will be able to manage any 1 hour in a 2 hour period. How would this work considering the meter readings are half hourly?

It would be great of someone in the know could come and explain how they set and then measure a customers criteria and then I could work out why I have failed 3 times whilst smashing their targets.

These failures are affecting a lot of customers and they may have opened pandoras box and could find that alienated customers decide to shift their energy usage to peak time in protest.

I don't have a smart meter and choose to use as little or as much energy whenever I need to. To be fair, my part of the world possibly generates more energy per capita than pretty much anywhere else in the UK and in a rural area like mine, demand peaks are 4am and 1pm, so shifting anything by an hour each way at tea time is pretty pointless.


Smart meter readings are half hourly so you need an initial reading, a midpoint reading and an endpoint reading to determine savings.

So 5pm, 5.30pm and 6pm, or 5.30pm, 6pm and 6.30pm are equally valid in theory.

But if half the people move energy from the first half into the second half, and the other half do it the other way around...I don't see any reduction in grid demand.

Hopefully @PeterT_EONNext will be able to give some clarification before kickoff.

I would also like someone in the know to explain why they invite you to go on an Energy Shift and then cannot give you the results! I'm still awaiting the results from the 22nd of November!

I expect that the "one hour" reference is a typo carried over from the previous emails.

Interestingly my "usual" energy shift target for a 1 hour event is around 0.8 kWh but on this occasion it is 3.14 kWh over 2 hours which is MORE than my usual usage. I could charge my PHEV for the full 2 hours and still meet the target!

I'm interested to know too, if I do any hour within 5-7 will it qualify or is it actually for two hours?? Would someone from Eonnext who knows be able to provide a definitve response? Many thanks

WARNING!.
I took part in the energy shift trial a few weeks ago. I decided to just switch everything off, including the heating, which I've been trying not to use in the mornings to save money. As a result, the temperature in my bungalow has on occasion dropped to below 10 degrees. This may not seem too problematic at first, but I noticed my TV was buggered. It wasn't until I turned the heating on for a bit that it started working again. After a bit of googling, I found it that you could cause permanent damage to electronics if they get too cold. So be warned. My TV is really old so wouldn't have been the end of the world, but I'd hate for someone to lose a brand new large TV just in order to save a few pounds. Steve

Your problem was likely to be condensation rather than temperature. Putting the heating back on will usually dry things out again.
