Hi. Is there any variance in the actual times my Economy 7 works. For example, I have been told that my E7 night rate starts at 0000 and ends at 0700 GMT (for BST it's 1 hour later). However, does this tariff come into effect at exactly these times or could there be any variance, e.g. the night rate tariff starts 10 minutes earlier or later than the times I have been given? I've been told by the Energy Ombudsman that there could be a tolerance of up to +/- 2 hours! i.e. for my case, it's possible the night tariff 'on' time could be anything from 2200 to 0200. This means that I can't be certain that I'll be charged at the night rate from 0000 and I may be charged the day rate for up to 2 hours later.
Just as point of note, everything up to the meter itself is the responsibility of the DNO. Everything downstream of the meter is the responsibility of the householder.
The meter itself is the responsibility of the supplier, e.g. E.On Next. If the E7 timings are a function of the meter, then making sure these timings are as close as possible also becomes the responsibility of the supplier.
If they have given you 'incorrect timings', that is to say the timings they quote you are at odds with the information on your MPAN (which can be checked) then that is one issue. The meters having a 'tolerance' is a completely separate issue and I suspect is an OFGEM 'cover the industries ass' get-out clause to save them the hassle of actually doing their job properly.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
Depending on your meter, the internal clock could be way out, too.
In the Good old days, timings were controlled via an off-air signal broadcast from the Radio 4 long wave transmitter at Droitwich, and these were accurate to about a minute.
Most newer E7 meters have an internal clock. They 'should' get a fairly accurate time base from the 50Hz mains frequency, or use a crystal oscillator like a quartz watch, but can still drift a bit.
@retrotecchie thanks for this. Previously I have had a meter where the clock was out by a significant way but my understanding is that it's the suppliers responsibility to maintain it's accuracy, and not the consumer.
Back in the days of E7 with dual immersions and night storage heaters, many systems were installed with a big old Sangamo mechanical time clock. That used to be pretty accurate, but would lose a little time eventually. Technically, it was adjustable, but the perspex cover was sealed with the same wire and lead seal as the meter so you couldn't tamper with it. When meter readers came, they were from the actual electricity board rather than subcontractors so could open up the time switch, adjust the clock, and then reseal it again.
These days, it is technically possible with newer meters using the optical interface and a small hand-held terminal, but I wonder how many of them actually bother to check the clock.
Some meters do just keep good time. Others, not so good.
Agree! In all my years of having a meter reader visit, knowing that we're on E7 as had to note two readings, they never checked the clock! I know as I stood by them as they took the readings! My issue is that the Energy Ombudsman is saying that the meters have a +/- 2 hour tolerance and therefore EON haven't been at fault when giving me incorrect E7 tariff times. The two things are completely separate in my view!
