Have PV panels, have SMETS1, but need SMETS2
-
Hi all, we've Eon supply & have solar PV panels which meet the SEG requirements. We want to apply for the SEG tariff, but have a SMETS1 meters, not SMETS2. Any ideas on how to progress getting these upgraded? The helpdesk are saying 2025.....

SMETS1 meters are rather obsolete, however, if they have been migrated onto DCC's centralised network and are sending readings as they should, then they are deemed to be 'working for now' and not a priority when it comes to the rolling upgrade program.
The migration of older meters was to have been completed by the end of 2021 but that has been extended to the end of this year, and likely to be extended again. Replacement of orphaned SMETS1 with SMETS2 was also due to have been completed by the end of this year but has been extended to 2025.
So, the priority for upgrade works as follows.
Anyone without smart meters at all who request an upgrade will possibly get first dibs as installation of new meters counts towards OFGEMs rollout quotas.
Anyone whose meter goes out of the date certification window should have their meters replaced at a matter of course.
Anyone whose SMETS1 meters cannot have them migrated via DCC will have them replaced at some point, to be determined only after all attempts to migrate have failed.
Anyone who 'needs' SMETS2 in order to facilitate a change of tariff, or to facilitate an export for FIT/SEG, will have to be 'fitted' in as and when.
EVERYTHING is scheduled to be done and dusted by end of 2025, and to the best of my knowledge, that is 'final', but as every other deadline has slipped, I'm not holding my breath.
The only thing I can suggest is to keep badgering Customer Services.Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons. -
@retrotecchie @Bennie_EONNext
Huge thanks retro & Bennie for the fast & comprehensive replies to this.
Unfortunately, our SMETS1 meter doesn't "talk" to Eon (or the in house display) - following a supplier change from B Gas years ago, it's dumb. See pic....the Trilliant box HAN light just flashes red. We've been trying to get them to fix the SMART problem for almost a year....but are now belatedly wanting to get the SEG tariff, realising we're giving Eon free elec. (not much, but ouch).
Bennie, the meter is a Landis+Gyr E470 not sure about the Exp screen (I can check in daylight).
It sounds like we'll have to wait "to be fitted in".... but maybe we should try & find another more flexible "capped" supplier. Doesn't seem fair.

I'd persist with emailing Customer Services. In theory, if that meter doesn't show up on the network by 31/12/22 then it should be replaced.
There are also known issues with the E470 meters not working correctly in export mode...some variants do have an export register, but some people end up getting charged for what's generated as if they were importing the power.

@JayEff Thank you for the pic, we can definitely work with this. If you can have a look during day light and see if you have that option we can see how we can support you 😀

Thanks both again. Really appreciate your input. I'll check that Exp functionality tomorrow. I'm assuming there's no point in starting the SEG application until this is sorted.

@JayEff
Now then....it is , of course, possible that pulling the trigger on SEG might chivvy up the meter replacement...chicken/egg, you know? -
Thanks again both for your time on this.
The meter has a "Credit Mode" screen (see pic), but nothing saying Exp as I poll round the screens. There's just a small test "Import" as visible on the pic on most screens.
I'm an utter Twitter newbie, but I / (at least, I think I) have posted a general request on Eons twitter page too.😂,,, in case that helps - hope that doesn't cut across you Bennie.... not sure how Community & Eon work together?
Not feeling so optimistic now....Any good Bennie?

@JayEff
Credit mode just shows it's a traditional credit meter and not operating as a PAYG top-up meter.
The fact you don't have an Exp display means the meter is not set up to provide measurement of your exported electricity.
So...you will need to have the meter replaced with a meter that supports export or a separate export meter for the SEG. -
Update on timescales.
If you have a meter that cannot be transferred to DCC then suppliers have to take all reasonable steps to replace your meter with a SMETS 2 meter by 31st December 2023. This deadline was extended by a year in October 2022.
