Ok I now have a debit bill. Unfortunately it doesn't say anything about taking the payment on such and such a date. It still says I am paying by dd and they have my bank details. So why does it still look wrong. (I so wanted to say Bingo all is well!) It's just so confusing.
Download your full pdf bill rather than the abbreviated summary. Your payment schedule will be shown on there.

Reason: Missing tag
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.

The full bill in the downloaded pdf doesn't mention taking the payment. They have such mixed messages on my account. On one page it says I am paying by dd and qutes my name and bank account number, and then on another page it says i have no dd in place. It's just crazy.
I had the same experience until the lovely @DebF_EONNext sorted mine out for me...hint hint. However, until it is sorted, you can at least make a manual payment via the app or website. The fact that they have your bank details correct means they just need to actually request the payment.
I just had a quick look at your account and I can see what the issue is. Before I can make any changes I will need to run through security with you so I will pop you a private message 😊

Is this an issue you can share with the wider community? - in case this happens in the future for someone else.
Sometimes there can be a direct debit in place but the payment schedule can be set to manual instead of direct debit, unfortunately our system doesn't request the payment as it doesn't recognise the DD and expects a manual payment instead. 😊

Thanks for that.
How can someone check that the payment schedule has been set to 'Direct Debit' rather than manual? Other than noticing on a bill-statement (as seen in @Chusty's last attached picture) 'As you have no Direct Debit in place, your balance is due for payment in 7 days'
I guess that most customers would falsely assume that setting up a DD would automatically set up a DD payment schedule at the same time as the instruction is set up.
