I've never been a big fan of automatics. I consider myself to be a slightly better driver than many folks as I have taken advanced driving courses, trained in defensive (and offensive, come to that) driving with the Police, hold several military driving qualifications and drove a 1965 Land Rover (that had three gearsticks!) for many years as my 'daily driver'.
That said, her indoors qualified for a Motability car this year. She can't actually drive, so I do the piloting.
We got a little French 'pocket rocket' with a three cylinder 1.2 litre petrol engine and a 8-speed automatic gearbox. Would not have been my first choice, but it is a cracking little car. Very different from my 1.9 manual turbodiesel, but a superb little car for pootling about, doing the shopping and socialising. My car is now relegated to 'business use' and taking stuff to the tip.
That said, it's nice to have the choice. If I'm away on one of my long-distance trips, the manual diesel is more economical and can carry more kit, tools and materials. It just looks like a skip on wheels!
