I see there is a new upcoming national grid initiative to encourage moving usage of high usage energy to off peak times and pay consumers to do so. This would work really well for my own usage so am pretty interested
is this something eon next are rolling out and is there a way to know if smart meters are compatible?
its very early days but a working smart meter is vital. It obviously is doomed to failure then!😜
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
The problem I have with this plan is that if someone uses electricity in abundance, which anyone is entitled to do of course if they pay for it, they'll get a payment for cutting back their usage at certain times.
Those of us that already control our usage will get diddly squat as we've already cut back (our choice I know), so there's nothing surplus to cut back on.
My plan would be that if you use less than a defined amount, you get bonus payments on a sliding scale. If you use more than a defined amount, you pay a premium, again on a sliding scale. It also removes the 'haves' and 'have nots' argument about smart meters.

I think it all depends how the plan works. So, if it’s a case of moving our washing machine or dishwasher usage etc to off peak then maybe even those who have cut back (as I have also) could benefit
the smart meter debate I know is a hot one, but realistically I guess the way the plan works needs a meter that can record usage at the specific times needed, I read it needs 30min readings. So smart meters, but I don’t know if that’s every smart meter or not
The press mentions £10 per day benefit to users. the average OFGEM customer bills are £3 per day. so that clearly doesn't seem realistic for shifting a washing machine load to off peak periods.

The devil is in the detail -which we don't have!
Well yes, it seems that is the case hence asking the original question :)
I think this was the initial trial @andydragon, I thought I read somewhere that it involved about 100, 000 customers. I think I'm right in saying that Octopus have a tariff that changes down to 30 minute intervals, popular with those into solar and batteries I think, so I can see why National Grid chose them for the trial.
Whether other suppliers are ready for that level of reactivity, and change, would be key I would have thought.
Yes, octopus has signed up and other providers are looking into it. Bulb has said they will not be involved. So it’s a lottery of if you have the right supplier, if you have the right meter and if you can reduce your usage
A fair number of posts here relate to customers whose smart meters are not in regular contact with their supplier. They would be denied access to such a scheme and thus money - we need a penalty on suppliers if smart metering isn’t made functional within say 7 days.
