It’s complicated but usually sorts itself out quickly and the provisional amount normally doesn’t change by more than pennies when it’s applied to your account.
Apparently it’s a bit like a pending transaction in your bank account and nothing to worry about.

I'm an Eon Next dual fuel customer with no particular expertise but have some time on my hands that I am using to try and help out a bit.
I had the same thing with my Sep 1st reading - eventually phoned up yesterday and the new smart gas reading taken the same daywith the new statement later in the day. No reason given as to why this happened (never happened before - the delay that is)
Thanks for the replies both. The provisional transaction is still showing and I'm still waiting for my monthly statement. Are any of the good EON Next people able to help? I have tried using the Facebook Messenger support, but not had a response after 5 days.

I tried Twitter and only got a reply a day or two later. I actually rang them up and was surprised to have a pick-up within minutes. The CS agent was able to pull through a smart meter read for that day and the provisional was wiped out. Next day (I think) the statement was raised and DD worked out for the September monthly payment (I am on Variable DD). Had I not been proactive, I'm not sure what I would have done BUT 5 days on I suspect your transaction will be stuck in the black hole called 'accounting'.
If it's only a reading that's required, then they would surely just estimate one. We've been told in the past that sometimes for some locations the calorific value, necessary to work out the kWh from the volume of gas used, isn't available and so the billing is provisional until the correct value is available. If this is correct it only happens on gas accounts. So now we wait for somebody to tell us it's happened on an electricity account.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.

Indeed although I don't want to have the annoyance of estimated bills especially as I had submitted a 'customer read' for this very reason. For some reason the monthly data pulls from the smart meter have not coincided with the actual statement date. Recent months have been 1-2 days earlier than the 1st for some reason yet September saw no smart meter read necessitating my own customer read, followed by a call to CS to unblock the 'provisional'. The statement was produced within the same day. On a few chats to Eon Next they tell me that the schedule for the Smart meter read is for the 1st of each month but it has happened before on say the 29th or the 30th or as happened this month for gas, not at all.
I think something quirky may be happening at Eon because the statement generation happened the same day after speaking with CS rather than being stuck in the glue called 'provisional'.😀
If you are on a fixed monthly direct debit, surely the odd estimated reading is of little if any consequence? Good that you got through so quickly - you have the magic touch!

Au contraire as Blackadder would say - yes I am on monthly direct debit, but of the variable kind, otherwise yes I'd agree. So I really want to see a statement (and following DD) that reflects accurate usage. Just a pet hate of mine having any estimations done on the bills, particularly as I ensure that Eon Next see a read on the 1st of every month (I joined them on 1st October 2021) and I also compile these mounthly readings on my own spreadsheet.
