As I say, this wasn't in a fireplace. It wasn't even in the house. Rather a dedicated outbuilding set up as a 'plant room' for the whole shooting match (PV, solar thermal, calorification, wood seasoning, etc).
20% MC for wood is the worst I would ever use. Most of mine came in at around 12-14% but then having an 80ft polytunnel with racks to store my wood on was always a bonus! An acre of short rotation coppiced willow kept us in 'burnables'.

Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.

It took me half an hour from first match until flames had sufficiently spread, so it sometimes needs more airflow than ideal lambda control should want during fire spreading. I think its time for me to be off and sleep on this.
I reckon that bigger gains could be obtained not from improvement of one fireplace, but from siting it for shared heating for the whole block.
Strangely enough, the Romans had very similar notions with their hypocaust system.
District heating is not that uncommon in Europe, especially further East. Not so good for somewhere like where I live where we don't live in 'blocks', but the 50 or so houses in the village are spread out over several square miles. Incidentally, my 19th century stone cottage I live in now used to be partially heated by the warmth given off by the animals in the barn attached to one end! Although I would imagine the system provided some warmth in winter, I'm not sure that I'd like bovine aromas venting into the bedroom. I guess farmers back in those days just ended up nose-blind!
