One of the reasons is that OFGEM have allowed the standing charge to be hiked to cover the cost of the 30 odd energy companies that have recently just gone bust.
Some of it is market speculation pushing up wholesale prices and the fact that about 40% of the UKs electricity is generated from gas, then there's the general 'fleecing' such as we're seeing with Petrol and Diesel etc. The price of oil is less than it was in 2008, and similar in price to what it was in 2011 and 2014.
Nearly £9 per gallon would make anyone's blood boil, the problem is that the vast majority who buy petrol or diesel these days have no idea what a litre is so they just fill up. Similarly, most consumers don't look at their bills so they have no idea of their energy usage, how it's calculated etc, the just go by their monthly payment.
The irony is that with energy bills for example, this lack of understanding results in more queries to the suppliers, more time/resource spent answering it all means a bit more added to everyone's bill to cover the costs.
If you read through this Forum and removed all posts related to smart meters, there'd be nothing but tumbleweed blowin' through. I'm all for progress, but at least get the basics right and make it work.
