THe standing charge for electricity has gone up very sharply, and not evenly across the UK. Some regions face larger increase than others because of works being carried out in those regions. But a major factor has been the decision to load all the costs energy suppliers have face dealing with the transfer of customers from failed companies. This includes credit balances which are migrated without the actual cash. Debit balances apparently stay with the old suppliers - cue eventually debt collectors.
Electricity standing charges were chosen to recover these costs as nearly everyone has an electricity account but less than 70% (i think) have gas accounts. It is therefore plain that the failure of OFGEM to regulate the industry has led to substantial additional costs for all customers, not just those who were with the failed companies.
