Remotely switching from Dual Rate to Single Rate Meter

    My old meter was a non-smart Economy 7 meter but, as I don't have storage heaters & I was already on a single rate tariff for day/night readings, when I had my new smart meter fitted I requested a Single Rate Smart Meter. I was told that there is only one smart meter and it can be set to either single or dual rate & it can also be remotely switched between single & dual rate.

    After my new meter, a Kaifa MA120, was fitted I discovered that it was showing 2 rates. I therefore contacted Customer Services as instructed & asked them to remotely switch my meter from dual rate to single rate. They replied that they cannot remotely switch my meter to single rate & I would need to have a new single rate meter fitted at a cost to me.

    Several weeks later, Eon Next said that they could remotely switch my meter after all but then the latest email from them & they have changed their minds again. They are now saying that I need 2 appointments - the first to downgrade my smart meter to a Classic 1-rate meter and the second appointment to upgrade the Classic 1-rate meter for a Smart 1-rate meter.

    Why can't Eon Next just remotely switch my Kaifa MA120 from dual rate to single rate?
    If they really can't do this, then why can't Eon Next do a straight swap from a Smart Dual Rate to a Smart Single Rate Meter? And why do they keep changing their minds?.

    Hey @Boscobel welcome to the community 👋

    It's my understanding that at the moment we can't remote switch between dual rate and single rate however I'm not 100% on this as it may have changed recently and I'm just not aware of it yet. What you could do though is go on a flat rate tariff so you are charged the same flat rate for day & night. Our energy specialists can arrange this for you 😊

    Let me do some digging around and I will get back to you Boscobel. It likely won't be today as I have some training this afternoon but as soon as I have a clear answer I will let you know!

    Hi @Boscobel ...

    If I understand correctly you previously had a 2 register peak/off peak non-smart meter and were billed through '2 readings 1 rate' single rate tariff. For simplicity, as you would never have an Economy 7 set-up, you asked for your new smart meter to be a single register meter, however you have found it is a 2 register one. I think an installation engineer follows the meter settings for your account.

    Of course E.ON Next could do your billing as previously, which is typically the case when somebody comes off E7, rather than changing the meter configuration.

    @Boscobel
    TBQH I don't think the EOn CS really know what they're doing >>>

    I'm on Next Drive where the readings for billing are taken from the ½ hourly recorded ToU readings.

    Originally my meter (Landis+Gyr E470 type 5424) showed a single active import register and one tariff rate.

    But some months ago it was remotely reconfigured by EOn with 2 registers for daytime R01 active import and off-peak R02 active import, with the daytime and off-peak tariff rates also set (albeit at incorrect times relative to the Next Drive timings)

    So clearly the smart meter technical team are able to remotely configure the meters, but I don't think the customer service staff are told this ☹️

    <edit>there's also possibly/maybe a difference with the Kaifa MA120 meter, (since no one has been able to find any detailed manual for this meter) but if it has adhered to the SMETS2 spec this should be possible </edit>
