Smart meter causing RCD unit to trip

We had a smart meter fitted, and almost instantly this caused our RCD unit to trip, with the power going off (upstairs) at regular intervals. Sometimes as much as 10 times a day. Called E.on, who would claim no accountability, even though we made it very clear that the problem was non-existent prior to getting the Smart Meter fitted.

Got an electrician out (luckily no charge) who could not find any problem with the wiring / smart meter, yet offered no solution. Power still went off upstairs overnight. It *IS* the smart meter as the unit being installed so close to the RCD unit causes problems - that's based on reading other people having the same problem.

When the elecrician took readings it appeared "as normal" as they was no activity on the smart meter at that point. Practically, and electrican cannot be there 24/7 waiting for a smart meter signal. when he took readings there was no surge. Supposedly, when the smart meter sends / receives information the radio signal causes a surge with can cause the electric to trip. If that just didn't happen when the electrician was here it would appear as normal. I'm only using basic facts and common sense to work this out. Yes, wed did also try the "unplug everything" approach. I am familiar with that a faulty appliance can cause a trip, none of our appliances are causing the trip - we have plugged everything in, one by one, and at no point does anything being switched on cause the power to trip.

What is certain, is that overnight, the smart meter sending / receiving information causes interferance which ammounts to the RCD unit tripping.

Would be highly interested in any suggestions of what to do in this situation.

Put a mobile phone as close to the RCD as you can.

    Ring the mobile.

If the RCD trips, change the RCD. A phone signal is the same as a meter signal and some RCDs are prone to RF interference. Mine are and my phone used to trip mine if it went off when was next to the consumer unit.

New CUs are all metal construction and earthed which acts as a shield to RF and when mine was updated from the plastic one last year, the problem vanished immediately.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.

I had the same problem, RCD would trip every night between midnight and 2am, then 5am to 7am. 3 weeks later and a very miffed electrician I read a forum about smart meters causing the RCD to trip. I covered my meter in foil out of desperation and guess what, no tripping!! I phoned E-on and explained and they refused it had anything to do with it.
I've since changed to British gas, I phoned them up, explained the situation and they came straight out and removed the smart meter, no more tripping or need for foil.

Looking through a number of forums both energy and electrical it's not an uncommon problem with new installations where the communication hub is fitted close to some RCD consumer units particularly the older plastic ones.

more evidence of E.on Next not treating their customers as others do.
Current Eon Next and EDF customer, ex Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.

Very true. Even one Australian electricians forum 😯 had a thread from a uk Eon client saying he had the problem and couldn't get it fixed. 🤔
