Smart meter says we’ve used tons, app doesnt

Recently moved into our new flat on wednesdsy

smart meter is saying we’ve used £80 in 3 days hardly using anything! Obviously this isn’t ideal because if that’s true we won’t be able to afford to pay this every month
but on the app it says we’ve only used £4. The meter was left here for us so we are unsure whether the meter is correct or if the app is
theres no fathomable reason as to how we could’ve used £80 in 3 days when we haven’t been using much electric
the app reading of £4 makes much more sense
how do we know what to believe? And how do we check the smart meter is connected to our account

What you are looking at is the in house display unit, or IHD. Not the meter itself.

The meter(s) will be in a service cubby, or main service cupboard somewhere.

If they didn't ask for meter reads, then chances are they pulled initial readings when you moved in. In any case, I suspect the IHD needs resetting as it's probably not actually displaying your energy costs, but a monthly or cumulative amount.

If it's a rented property, speak to the landlord and ask where the actual meters themselves are. If a private purchase, talk to a neighbour and ask them where the meters live.

If you've set up the app or the online account, you can keep tabs on your energy costs from there, if need be until you figure out what all the functions of the IHD are.

Is it a smart credit meter, or a smart prepay meter? I think you mean the in home display, not the meters themselves.

Did you take meter readings when you moved in, from the meters themselves? If so, take readings this evening and you can estimate your actual costs.

Is there an immersion heater been left on, or an electric heater on anywhere?

we don’t seem to have a meter anywhere in the flat
only a circuit breaker
so is the smart meter possibly reading the meter for the whole block of flats?

ask your neighbours where the meters are. Use your in home display to take a reading - this will be in kWh. Each kWh you use costs about 35 p normally.- then you can approximate your costs. What region are you in- once we know this we can tell you what the daily standing charge is.

we can advise but you need to take action - we can’t do it for you!
